The laboratory was established in 2022 to conduct research in ecology and geography. In its approaches, the team merges experimental methods of ground-based measurements of ecosystem functioning with the math-based methods of remote sensing (RS) data processing.
The main goal is to develop a set of approaches for RS data processing that will allow to use them most effectively as a source of information about landscape structure and organisation. Thereby, the key research focus of the lab is to develop methods for:
An offline final of the IT solutions competition for the development of the Arctic, named Arktek Data, was held on August 11. The GeoHSE team, consisting of two laboratory employees - Anna Derkacheva and Natalia Shartova, and faculty student Inna Panafidina, took second prize in the Urbanization track with a system prototype for analyzing the accessibility of health care in regions.
The training took place according to the program of the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+). Natalia Shartova, a leading researcher at the HSE International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology, took part in the event.
The IALE World Congresses are held every four years and are the largest international scientific event in the field of landscape ecology. Representatives of 63 countries took part in the last congress.
The Department of Geography of the National Research Tomsk State University and the Russian Section of the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE-Russia), with the participation of the International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology of the Higher School of Economics, will hold the First All-Russian Youth Field School seminar "Digital Technologies in Landscape and Environmental Research" on August 21-26, 2023.
Within the framework of the May series of scientific seminars of the laboratory, the report of researchers Anna Derkacheva and Robert Sandlerskiy "Results of the analysis of the representativeness of the existing network of ecological and climatic stations (EX) for the territory of Russia" was presented. The primary assessment of geographical representativeness of 29 ecological and climatic stations for climate, relief, soils and vegetation is given. Based on the Random forest method, both for all stations and for each one separately, territories with similar environmental parameters and territories whose physical and geographical conditions are not covered by observations in any way were identified.

The application of the Laboratory "Biophysical functions of South Taiga landscapes based on experimental and remote measurements" was supported by the competition commission of the program to attract Russian postdocs for the 2023/2024 academic year.
The key organizer was the IEEE international engineering society. The purpose of the event is to create a communication platform for representatives of dynamically developing high-tech branches of science. Despite the event was held for the first time, it was attended by academia and business from two dozen countries.
February 11, starting from 2016, is observed as the Day of Women and Girls in Science. Employees of the International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology, Natalia Shartova and Anna Derkacheva, shared their research, discussed the challenges in their work, and answered the question of whether anyone can pursue a career in science.
