The Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technology at HSE University has summed up the results of its 2026 admissions campaign, which achieved several record-high indicators at once. In total, 98 people were admitted to the first year of bachelor’s and master’s programmes: 59 bachelor’s students and 39 master’s students.

From August 12 to 19, 2026, the international scientific event «Greenhouse Gas Fluxes: Current Issues in Modern Research» was held in Moscow and the Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve. It included a conference, a field seminar, and a summer school. HSE University and Berdakh Karakalpak State University have signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen collaboration in research, education, and innovation. Through the expertise of its Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions of the Carbon Measurement Supersites Programme, HSE University will work with colleagues from Uzbekistan to assess climate risks and evaluate opportunities for implementing nature-based climate projects in the region. The partners also plan to develop joint research and educational programmes.

How did 19th-century archival maps transform into three-dimensional forest models? In July 2026, second-year students of the Geoinformation Technology and Spatial Modeling track at the HSE Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technologies conducted comprehensive mapping research at the Sochut Dendropark near the town of Stepanavan in Armenia. Founded in 1933 by biologist Edmond Leonovich, the arboretum is the first scientific and experimental forest ‘laboratory’ in the Transcaucasus. Here, centuries-old deciduous forests coexist with exotic coniferous plantings: Canadian hemlock, Himalayan cedar, and giant sequoias.

Researchers of the International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology took part in a major multi-institutional study of the carbon balance of Russia’s taiga peatlands

The Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions at HSE University and the Kazakhstan-based company SAFC are planning joint work on the implementation of climate projects in Kazakhstan. Specialists from the HSE centre visited the site of the country’s first forest climate project and signed a cooperation agreement with SAFC.

The neural network analysed nearly a million 12×12 m plots and found that the rate of shrub spread varies from 2.4% to 26.1% per decade, depending on local conditions. The study showed that mature shrubs prefer well-drained slopes, while new colonisation occurs on flatter areas, which opens up opportunities for predicting further shrubification of the Arctic under climate change conditions
