About the Faculty

The Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technologies at HSE University is a place for a new outlook on geography as a science and a profession. We are guided by the idea that the 21st century is the era of spatiality. Climate risks, settlement and migration, resources and infrastructure, and territorial development can be understood only through geographical differences, interconnections, and dynamics.

We bring together physical and human geography, geoinformation technologies, and artificial intelligence to analyse highly complex spatial systems—from local landscapes to global processes. For us, geography cannot be reduced to technologies and models. It is a way of understanding how global changes manifest in specific places and affect people’s lives. Geographers work where nature, the economy, and local communities intersect, helping society listen to what space tells us.

We strive to turn knowledge into tools and solutions, and to make real-world challenges the focus of research and education. We educate geographers of a new kind—people capable of working on expeditions, handling large amounts of geodata, and operating within decision-making systems. People who understand how spatial relations influence the future of the country and the world, and who are ready to shape that future.
