The Penultimate Seminar of the Series Was Held with the Participation of a Leading Foreign Specialist, Scientific Supervisor of the Laboratory F. Tatarinov
In the period from October 31 to December 05, 2023, the International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology conducts a series of seminars on the topic "Current methods and approaches in landscape and environmental research”. On November 28, a seminar was held on the topic "Water regime of trees in arid conditions – mechanisms of survival and extinction".
The Scientific Supervisor of the laboratory and consultant of the H. Weizmann Research Institute (Israel) F. Tatarinov spoke about the research conducted in Israel on the process of drying of trees observed in many regions of the world in drought conditions. In particular, the study of pine drying cases in the experimental Yatir forest in southern Israel showed that dying occurs primarily in areas with deep soil, while trees survive in areas with stony soil. A simple water balance model was used to explain this phenomenon. It was also found that about 8 months before the needles began to shrink, differences from the surviving trees in the dynamics of the trunk diameter were manifested. With the beginning of the wet season, there were differences in juice movement. At the same time, external signs of dying appeared only towards the end of the wet season.
