The International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology Held the Sixth Seminar of the Spring Series with the Participation of Scientific Supervisor Fyodor Tatarinov
At the workshop, which took place on 29 May, an independent researcher, candidate of economic sciences Alexey Anatolievich Kotko spoke about modelling and economic valuation of ecosystem services.
The presentation outlined the basics of the concept of ecosystem services, their classification and the main tools for their valuation. InVEST and ARIES, the two main software packages used to calculate ecosystem services under different scenarios of natural resource use, were reviewed and briefly compared. Both packages use mathematical models of ecosystem services and tools for comparing alternative scenarios of development and land use. The typical sequence and complexity of data preparation steps, the use of typical models and the analysis of the results of mathematical modelling with InVEST are covered. The general problems of dynamic multidimensional spatial data processing and the issues of separating unmanageable and manageable trends in territorial change are touched upon.
