Estimates of Carbon Balance Based on Remote Sensing Data Were Discussed at Online Seminar of the Laboratory
On March 31, 2022, a joint online seminar was held by the international laboratory of landscape ecology of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, the Laboratory of Biogeocenology IPEE RAS and the laboratory of biogeography of the IG RAS, dedicated to the issues of assessing the carbon balance based on remote sensing data.
The main speaker of the seminar was the senior researcher of the international laboratory of landscape ecology and the laboratory of biogeography of the IG RAS Ph.D. Alexander N. Krenke. He spoke about the assessment of the carbon balance using remote sensing data on the example of the Kaluga carbon polygon.
He showed the main results of the assessments - maps and calculation models of the main components of the forest ecosystems — tree species and soil types. Alexander also presented the so-called carbon calculator, a software product that allows, based on growth tables and Landsat data, to obtain carbon balance estimates with a spatial resolution corresponding to the resolution of the remote sensing information.
During the discussion, the methodological and practical problems of verifying the presented methodology according to the data of ecological and climatic stations equipped with Eddy covariance sensors in the Central Forest Reserve were discussed.
